How can I get my children to listen without yelling, nagging and lecturing
What can I do to manage my own feelings of frustration and overwhelm when parenting gets tough?
Now, let’s dive into this week’s question:
Are there specific biblical principles or teachings that can guide me in my parenting journey?
Even though I became a Christian when I was 13, the Bible was confusing to me and I struggled to read it consistently. It wasn’t until I had children and joined women’s Bible studies that I really fell in love with God’s Word. One study challenged us to choose five topics in the Bible that we would like to learn and grow in over the next five years. By studying these topics, we could grow in wisdom and knowledge and be able to share and teach others as we continued to learn from them. The topics I chose were women in the Bible, parenting, marriage, God’s Word, and prayer.
While I’m not a theologian or Bible teacher, I have grown a lot over those five years and now, looking back on 13 years of studying God’s Word, I continue to ask to fall in love with Him and His Word. These are some of my favorite biblical principles and scriptures that have guided me in my parenting journey, and I hope they encourage you!
My Top 10 Parenting Bible Verses
Teach Children God’s Word:
“These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
– Deuteronomy 6:6-7
It’s so important to keep God’s Word at the center of our lives and to share it with our kids in everyday moments. This way, faith becomes a natural part of their daily routine.
Discipline with Love:
– Proverbs 29:17
“Discipline your children, and they will give you peace; they will bring you the delights you desire.”
Discipline is tough but necessary. When done in love, it guides our kids and brings harmony to the home, making life more joyful for everyone.
Model Godly Living:
“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
– 1 Corinthians 11:1
Our kids watch everything we do, so let’s be the kind of people we want them to become. Following Christ’s example helps them see what a godly life looks like.
Encourage and Build Up:
– 1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
A little encouragement goes a long way. When we build up our kids with positive words, it boosts their confidence and strengthens our relationship.
Pray for Your Children:
– 1 Thessalonians 5:17
“Pray without ceasing.”
Prayer is such a powerful tool. Regularly praying for our children helps us stay connected to God and shows our kids the importance of turning to Him.
Teach Respect and Obedience:
– Ephesians 6:1-3
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—’so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’”
Teaching our kids to respect and obey us isn’t just about rules; it’s about setting them up for a blessed life. God promises good things when they honor their parents.
Don’t Grow Weary in Doing Well:
– Galatians 6:9
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Parenting can be exhausting, and sometimes it feels like our efforts go unnoticed. But hang in there! God promises that our perseverance will pay off, and we’ll see the fruits of our hard work in due time. Keep doing good—you’re making a bigger impact than you know.
Teach Them to Love Others:
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
– 1 John 4:7
Love is at the heart of our faith. By teaching our kids to love others, we’re helping them reflect God’s love and build meaningful relationships.
Avoid Provoking Your Children:
– Ephesians 6:4
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
It’s easy to get frustrated, but we need to avoid pushing our kids too hard. Gentle guidance helps them grow in their faith and character without feeling overwhelmed.
Trust in God’s Plan:
– Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Raising children can be unpredictable and we cannot control the outcome, but it is wise to train them in God’s ways. We can do our best and trust God with the rest!
